Research & Scholarly Activity

This page is designed to update our Ascension Saint Agnes community about the many scholarly activities going on within our Graduate Medical Education residency training programs. There are many ways to measure the quality of a residency program, but one important way is scholarly activity. We want to share with you what our residents and faculty are doing. In addition to their many clinical duties, they have dedicated themselves to these scholarly activities, consistent with the Requirements for Graduate Medical Education published by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The staff of the Departments of Medicine and Surgery has a strong commitment to mentoring and collaborating with, our trainees to improve the quality and quantity of scholarly activity.

What defines a Scholarly Activity?

The ACGME borrowed and modified the work of educator Earnest Boyer when defining scholarly activity. Earnest Boyer described four parts or types of scholarship: the scholarship of discovery, the scholarship of integration, the scholarship of application and the scholarship of teaching. The scholarly activity of a resident may be in any of these four areas. Examples of resident scholarship include: participation in research; publication and presentation at national and regional meetings; participating in grand rounds; quality-improvement or patient-safety projects; providing teaching to students and junior residents; and developing curricula or competencies for educational programs. Our ACGME-accredited residency programs in medicine and surgery are working extensively in all of these areas of scholarly activity.
